Maybe materially we are better off, but culturally and spiritually we are clearly worse off.
I bought my house in 1979 and my property taxes were $600/year. I still live in the same house in 2025 and the property taxes are $8,000/year. My house is not worth 13X what I paid and I’m not getting 13X the services from the county. HOWEVER, Illinois government has grown much larger, and that’s where my money goes.
