In my opinion, the root of all evil was that Ukraine, when it left the Soviet Union, it should have gone out with what it had gone in. That means, the Donbass, Odessa and Kharkow and of course the Crimean peninsula should have returned to Russia. Those territories were never in history part of an independent Ukraine, on the contrary, they were part of the Russian Empire for centuries. Their iinhabitants are ethnic Russians, not Ukrainians. Ukraine just exploited the weakness of the Soviet Union at that time. If Ukraine had left with what it had gone in, that whole dilemma wouldn’t exist. I think the Russians are correct, when they speak of liberating those places they conquer, because they were Russian all the time.
Putin never has “talked peace;” don’t fall for this. He thought he could distract his people from Russia’s lack of freedom and economic opportunity by taking over Ukraine, and we saw how that didn’t work. He’s losing.
